Shifting in-DRAM

Feb 27, 2026 by William C. Tegge, Alex K. Jones

We built a DRAM-subarray tweak that lets you do true horizontal bit shifts in open-bitline arrays by repurposing migration cells into top and bottom shift rows, so you get bidirectional in-DRAM shifting without transposes or extra shifter logic. It keeps standard DRAM compatibility, leverages existing cell structures, and we validated timing, energy, circuit behavior and a VLSI layout—practical, low-overhead shifting straight where the data lives.
